Southern NH RC&D Partners with the International Institute of New Hampshire

The Bhutanese Knitting Group

The Southern New Hampshire RC&D Council (SNHRC&D) promotes and facilitates the development of the area's natural and human resources in a manner that benefits the economic well-being of its citizens, while maintaining or improving the quality of the natural resource base of the counties of Cheshire, Hillsborough, Rockingham, Strafford, Merrimack, and Sullivan.  RC&D areas are locally sponsored areas designated by the Secretary of Agriculture for federal RC&D technical and financial assistance program funds

NRCS State Conservationists are assigned Federal responsibility to follow national program guidelines for the RC&D program in each State. The State Conservationist ensures cooperation among the USDA services sought by the RC&D councils to implement local projects. NRCS employs coordinators to provide technical day-to-day coordination of resources sought by RC&D councils.

The International Institute of New Hampshire offers comprehensive resettlement services to newcomers in New Hampshire. Their mission is to provide the resources, guidance and educational opportunities that enable new Americans to make a positive contribution to our communities and to become economically self-sufficient. Every year, IINH successfully resettles close to 250 refugees in New Hampshire alone.

SNHRC&D partnered with IINH to provide an avenue for NH sheep and wool producers, along with NH USDA/NRCS employees to donate yarn and knitting supplies for the Bhutanese Knitting Group.  From these donations, the Refugee’s have been able to create a small successful business by knitting sweaters, hats and mittens which they sell at community gatherings.
