National Pollinator Week, June 20-26, 2011

In recognition of the importance of pollinators such as bats, birds, bees and butterflies to agriculture,  forests,  grasslands  and myriad other ecosystems, US Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack recently proclaimed June 20-26, 2011, as National Pollinator Week.  He calls upon the people of the of the United States to join in celebrating the vital significance of pollinators with observances and activities.

NRCS Works to Restore Habitat of the New England Cottontail

Over the past several decades, the New England Cottontail rabbit (NEC) population and habitat have been in serious decline.  Since 1960, the NEC's historic range has declined 86%.  As a result of declining numbers and habitat, the NEC was listed as a federal
candidate species under the Federal Endangered Species Act in 2006.

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack and Assistant Attorney General West Announce Process to Resolve Discrimination Claims of Hispanic and Women Farmers
 

As part of continued efforts to close the chapter on allegations that discrimination occurred at USDA in past decades, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Assistant Attorney General Tony West today announced the establishment of a process to resolve the claims of Hispanic and women farmers and ranchers who assert that they were discriminated against when seeking USDA farm loans.

NRCS Works With Partners to Install High Tunnel Demonstration Sites
 

The NRCS is working with the NH Association of Conservation Districts (NHACD) to build high tunnel sites throughout NH to showcase the value of high tunnels. So far, four tunnels have been built, allowing the local conservation districts to share the new technology with their constituents, and spread the word about NRCS financial assistance for high tunnels through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP).

IINH Demonstration Site
 

One of the high tunnel demonstration sites is in Manchester, NH at the International Institute site. The project is aimed at providing the local refugee farmers with practical skills and knowledge for high tunnel crop production.
